Company History

In 1867 Henry Barrett saw that the future was made of steel and decided to leave his job at a Bradford iron stockholding company to set up a steel stockholding business. His idea proved to be a resounding success. As steel took over from iron in the late 19th and early 20th century Henry's business in Bradford grew with the increasing demand into a thriving steel stockholder. In 1910 he acquired Robert's Iron Foundry at Dudley Hill, Bradford and this remains the site of our Bradford operation today.

Barrett Steel has continued to grow over the years into a major national steel stockholder and with our investment in technology and personnel we can now meet and drive forward your expectations of the products and services that a stockholder can provide.

Products and Services

We hold stocks of over 8,000 tonnes of general steel at our Bradford site in addition to numerous associated products including Handrail & Walkway products, Tubeclamps, Wrought Iron components and the Q-railing Stainless Steel balustrading system.

Our in house processing facilities comprise 13 saws, shotblasting & priming plant and a drill saw line. All of this means that we are in a position to meet the needs of all steel users from those requiring a few bars cut to size to large structural users wanting cut, drilled and shotblasted & primed sections.

We operate a fleet of 28 vehicles ranging from pick-up trucks to articulated units capable of carrying 29 tonnes allowing us to offer a fast and reliable delivery service from our Bradford site.

The Barrett Group

The levels of service provided from our Bradford site are enhanced by being part of the Barrett Steel Group of steel stockholders, which is one of the largest independent steel stockholding groups in the country.

The Barrett Steel group consists of over 25 general steel stockholding depots along with specialist sites for Tubes, Precision Tubes, Engineering Bar and Profiling holding in excess of 80,000 tonnes of stock. With all of our sites having cutting capability and seven of them housing shotblasting and priming plant the Barrett Steel Group offers large stocks and high levels of service across the country.

In addition to the investment at our Bradford site in a new Saw/Drill Line and Shotblasting and Priming facility we have invested heavily in the infrastructure of our group. Our new Omega Steel site specialising in the processing of structural sections represents a £6 million investment in some of the most technologically advanced machinery available today. We have also added a Jumbo Laser Tube cutting machine, which is the largest one in the country and can process tubes up to 20" in diameter - Hollow Sections 400 x 400 & 500 x 300 in thicknesses up to 16mm, with a maximum input length of 18m and finished lengths of 15m. to the existing three laser tube machines at our specialist Tubes site.
